Lanalhue Lake, Natural lake in Arauco Province, Chile
Lanalhue Lake is a freshwater lake in Arauco Province, set among forested hills in the south of Chile. Its shores shift between sandy stretches, reed beds, and wooded slopes that reach down to the water.
The lake formed along a tectonic fault, which explains its long, narrow shape. The surrounding area was a site of conflict between Spanish colonial forces and Mapuche communities during the 17th and 18th centuries.
The name Lanalhue comes from indigenous languages, marking the long relationship between Mapuche communities and this water body. People visit and gather here in ways that continue this connection to the land.
The lake is easy to reach from Cañete, a small town nearby with places to stay and local shops. Roads along the shore are mostly paved, but some tracks leading to the water can be rough after rain.
The name Lanalhue comes from Mapudungun and is often translated as 'place of the dead' or 'lost place', likely tied to old stories connected to the lake. This contrasts noticeably with how calm and open the lake looks when you arrive.
