Añelo, human settlement in Argentina
Añelo is a small city in Neuquén Province in southern Argentina that is growing rapidly. The town sits above the Vaca Muerta shale formation containing major oil and gas deposits, and features simple buildings, wide streets, and flat terrain marked by persistent wind.
Before 1994 Añelo was just a small village with few residents. The discovery of Vaca Muerta triggered massive migration starting in the 2000s, causing the town to grow over 60 percent between 2010 and 2022.
The name Añelo comes from the Guaraní language meaning "bush". Today the town is a meeting point where people from different regions of Argentina gather to build new lives and opportunities together.
Most streets outside the center are unpaved and dusty, and strong winds can make walking difficult. Hotels and lodging are expensive and book up quickly, so book well in advance.
What stands out is the gap between industrial wealth and daily shortages: while millions of liters of water are pumped for gas extraction, around 700 families lack access to piped natural gas. This reveals the tension between resource extraction and local infrastructure.
