Puente ferroviario Biobío, Railway bridge across Bío Bío River in Concepción, Chile
Puente Ferroviario Biobío is a steel railway bridge that crosses the Bío Bío River, linking Concepción with San Pedro de la Paz. The structure is composed of metal sections supported by multiple pillars, with a tunnel passing beneath Cerro Chepe before the bridge begins its span.
The bridge was built in 1889 by The Arauco Company Limited to connect Concepción with coal mines in Lota and the port of Coronel. This structure became essential for moving resources from mining areas to urban centers and shipping ports.
The bridge represents a key element in the development of Chile's railway system, enabling the transportation of goods and passengers between major urban centers.
The bridge is part of the Biotren system and carries daily commuter traffic between the two municipalities. The best viewing opportunities are from the riverbank areas or nearby roads where pedestrians can safely observe the structure from different angles.
The crossing is preceded by a substantial tunnel that runs through Cerro Chepe, carved through the mountain to allow trains to reach the bridge approach. This underground passage is an overlooked engineering achievement that few travelers notice when crossing.
