Historia de Concepción, Historical mural in Civic District, Concepción, Chile
Historia de Concepción is a large fresco divided into three panels located inside the Regional Government building on Avenida Arturo Prat. The artwork covers about 280 square meters and presents the city's development across different historical periods on one expansive wall surface.
The fresco was painted by Chilean artist Gregorio de la Fuente between 1943 and 1946 after he won a competition to design the new Central Station building. The mural became part of that architectural project for the city's important transportation hub.
The mural shows how the city evolved through indigenous Mapuche life, European arrival, farming practices, and industrial growth. These visual layers let visitors see the different periods that shaped Concepción without needing to read explanations.
The monument is located at Avenida Arturo Prat 525 in the Regional Government building, which was originally a railway station and remains easily accessible to the public. You can view the fresco during regular daytime hours when the building is open.
The central panel features a female figure holding the city's coat of arms, surrounded by farmers, steam locomotives, and the goddess Ceres. This central composition symbolically brings together the different elements that define Concepción's identity.
