Palacio Elguín, Historical palace in Barrio Brasil, Santiago, Chile

Palacio Elguín is a three-story mansion in Barrio Brasil that blends Italian Renaissance, Gothic, and Byzantine architectural styles throughout its design. The building features ornate balconies, stained glass windows, and approximately twenty rooms including a dining hall with French furnishings.

Nazario Elguín, a wealthy mining entrepreneur, commissioned architect Teodoro Burchard to build this eclectic residence in 1887 at the corner of Alameda Bernardo O'Higgins and Avenida Brasil. It was declared a National Monument on 29 April 2014 by Decree No. 195 of the Council of National Monuments. Fires, earthquakes and the loss of its east wing to apartment construction have not erased its presence on the Alameda.

The building now houses Casa Palacio, a cultural space that promotes artistic initiatives across disciplines and rents out workshops and rooms. It includes a visual arts hall of the Universidad de Santiago de Chile. In 2022 it hosted "Dura y Eterna", a tribute to Hija de Perra with Centro Arte Alameda, and in 2023 the Ciclo Concordia concerts.

The palace stands at the corner of Alameda Bernardo O'Higgins and Avenida Brasil, on the busy Alameda in Barrio Brasil. The eastern wing was cut away to build apartments, so the building is smaller than its original plan. Inside, the triple-height Romanesque vestibule and surrounding salons show fire and earthquake damage; the Casa Palacio cultural space occupies the premises and rents out workshops and rooms.

The dining room holds a French Renaissance buffet decorated with detailed carvings depicting Isabella I of Castile and Christopher Columbus. This uncommon decoration reveals the refined European taste and international connections that wealthy Chilean families maintained.
