Palacio Elguín, Historical palace in Barrio Brasil, Santiago, Chile
Palacio Elguín is a three-story mansion in Barrio Brasil that blends Italian Renaissance, Gothic, and Byzantine architectural styles throughout its design. The building features ornate balconies, stained glass windows, and approximately twenty rooms including a dining hall with French furnishings.
Mining entrepreneur Nazario Elguín commissioned German architect Teodoro Burchard to design this residence in 1885. The site was previously owned by Mercedarian priests before being developed into this private mansion.
Today the palace serves as a cultural center hosting art exhibitions and creative workshops throughout its rooms. The space shows how affluent families of the late 1800s used their homes as gathering places and centers for artistic life.
The building sits on Avenida Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins in an accessible location within Barrio Brasil. The renovated interior spaces with restored wooden floors are easy to navigate and offer comfortable conditions for visiting.
The dining room holds a French Renaissance buffet decorated with detailed carvings depicting Isabella I of Castile and Christopher Columbus. This uncommon decoration reveals the refined European taste and international connections that wealthy Chilean families maintained.
