The observatory traces its origins to 1849 when Lieutenant James Melville Gilliss established the first astronomical station on Santa Lucia Hill for the United States Naval Observatory.
The Department of Astronomy at the University of Chile manages this scientific center, contributing to astronomical research and education in South America since 1927.
Located at Camino del Observatorio 1492, the facility maintains multiple telescopes and instruments for studying celestial objects throughout the southern hemisphere.
Soviet astronomers provided telescopes and collaborated with Chilean scientists at this location from 1962 until departing after the political changes of 1973.
