Cerro Manquehue, Mountain summit in Santiago Metropolitan Region, Chile
Cerro Manquehue is a mountain summit in the Santiago Metropolitan Region that rises to approximately 1,640 meters. Marked trails lead to the top, providing views across Santiago and toward the larger peaks of the Andes chain beyond the city.
The mountain was named by Mapuche communities who inhabited the region before European arrival. The name refers to condors, birds the indigenous people would have observed soaring above this elevated terrain.
The summit attracts hikers and outdoor enthusiasts from Santiago who visit regularly, especially in the early hours of the day. It serves as a gathering place where residents connect with nature and escape the intensity of city life.
The hike to the summit typically takes about three hours on clearly marked trails. Starting early in the morning allows you to avoid midday heat and ensures adequate daylight for both the ascent and descent.
Large raptors can often be spotted circling above the peak, making the mountain's original name feel current and meaningful. These birds are especially visible in the early morning when thermal currents bring them to the area.
