Palacio Riesco, Historic palace in Huechuraba, Chile

Palacio Riesco is a two-story neoclassical building with a grand salon in imperial style, illuminated by art-nouveau stained glass windows and decorated with parquet flooring. The property contains multiple rooms connected through corridors that lead to three towers.

The land at El Salto, then a league from Santiago, passed through owners including Rodrigo de Araya, Manuel de Salas and, from 1872, Elvira Salas Laso, who married Alberto Riesco Errázuriz. The 1906 earthquake destroyed the adobe buildings on the estate. Riesco Errázuriz then had engineer José Ramón Herrera Lira build a summer residence ahead of the 1910 Centenary, sparing no expense.

The palace takes its name from Alberto Riesco Errázurriz, an aristocrat, canal-builder and art collector who married Elvira Salas Laso, heiress of the El Salto farm. After his wife died childless, the estate passed to him and to the children he later had with her sister Clemencia Salas, a union much discussed at the time. The building later housed his art collection.

The palace stands at Rinconada El Salto 100, at the junction of Américo Vespucio and El Salto in Huechuraba, about a league from central Santiago. It has been out of service since 2010, so it cannot be visited inside; the building is seen from the surrounding streets. It was declared a National Monument in 1992 and restored between 1995 and 1998.

The 1906 earthquake destroyed every adobe structure on the estate, including the old manor house, which is why the present palace was built. Its gardens were planted with poplars and eucalyptus, and the grounds once held stables where milk was sold.
