Campus Lo Contador, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Historical monument and university campus in Providencia, Chile
Campus Lo Contador is a university grounds in Providencia combining a preserved colonial house with contemporary structures. The site contains faculty offices, an auditorium, and shared spaces for students and staff of the Catholic university.
The Lo Contador estate originated in the 18th century when Francisco Antonio Avaria purchased land between Cerro San Cristobal and the Mapocho River for his niece Mercedes Contador. Over time it became part of an important educational institution focused on design and urban planning.
The campus blends a colonial house with modern learning spaces, hosting the School of Architecture, Design and Urban Studies since 1958. The building shows how different eras coexist within the same educational environment.
The grounds sit along El Comendador street and function as an active learning center with multiple teaching spaces. Note that this is a working university campus where some areas may have restricted access during class hours.
During the War of the Pacific, the colonial building served as a recovery hospital before later becoming an educational space. This dual purpose reveals how central the structure was to community life during different periods.
