ECLAC headquarters, Brutalist administrative building in Vitacura, Chile.
ECLAC headquarters is a building with distinctive exposed concrete architecture featuring 28 supporting pillars on the main floor that create an open spatial design. The complex includes water fountains, landscaped gardens, and outdoor areas organized around functional zones.
The building opened in 1966 with a ceremony attended by Chilean President Eduardo Frei Montalva and United Nations Secretary-General U Thant. This event marked a significant moment for regional cooperation and the establishment of an international institution in Chile.
The entrance displays handprints of construction workers and officials, symbolizing the collective effort behind building this international organization center. These marks remind visitors of the many hands involved in making this building possible.
When visiting, you can explore the outdoor grounds where water features and landscaping complement the building. Plan enough time to see all levels and different areas without rushing.
The North Building renovation features a rooftop photovoltaic system generating more than 400,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. This project demonstrates how older structures can be adapted with modern energy technology.
