Estadio de Carabineros, Sports stadium in Santiago, Chile
Estadio de Carabineros was a sports complex in Santiago positioned along the Mapocho River and featured a football field alongside tennis courts, basketball courts, and a 50-meter swimming pool. The facility could hold around 12,000 spectators and was equipped with covered stands and wooden fencing.
The sports complex opened on September 22, 1923, under the direction of Santiago Police Prefect Julio Bustamante and a committee of senior police officials. The venue continued operating until its closure in June 1945.
The venue was home to Club Atletico Brigada Central, which later became Deportivo Carabineros, showing its deep ties to Chilean law enforcement. This connection shaped how the place was seen as an institution belonging to the police.
The complex was easily accessible through Santiago's street network and positioned along the river for convenient navigation. Note that this venue no longer operates and visitors can only see what remains of the historical location today.
On December 21, 1933, this venue made history by hosting the first football match played under artificial lighting in Chile. This event represented a significant step in the modernization of football in the country.
