Unidad Vecinal Providencia, Residential complex in Providencia, Chile
Unidad Vecinal Providencia is a residential complex located between Antonio Varas and Marchant Pereira streets comprising 31 buildings in total. The ensemble includes two 24-story towers, six 11-story structures, and 23 five-story residential buildings.
The Corporación de la Vivienda initiated this housing project in 1968 on the former site of the National Children's House. This development was part of a national strategy to reshape urban spaces.
Sixty ceramic tile murals by artist Abraham Friedfeld decorate the buildings throughout the complex. These artistic works combine with the earth-tone, orange, and green colors of the structures to create a unified visual identity.
The complex features pedestrian pathways that are separated from vehicle traffic and connect different areas throughout the site. These paths lead past gardens, water features, tennis courts, and an open-air amphitheater, making navigation straightforward.
The complex pioneered thoughtful urban design with clear separation of pedestrian and vehicle circulation throughout the site. This approach was innovative for the 1960s and later influenced many other housing projects in Latin America.
