Iglesia Matriz de las Hermanas de la Providencia, Catholic church in Providencia, Chile.
The Iglesia Matriz de las Hermanas de la Providencia is a Catholic church featuring neo-renaissance architecture with a single nave, thick brick walls, and ornately decorated interior ceilings. The structure displays characteristic details of 19th-century Italian ecclesiastical design.
The church was built between 1881 and 1890 by Italian architect Eduardo Provasoli and inaugurated with a formal service on August 15, 1890. Its construction marked an important religious and civic moment in the district's growth.
The church shaped the neighborhood so significantly that the adjacent avenue and the entire district took its name. It remains a central landmark for residents and visitors navigating the area.
The building is located at Nueva Providencia 1619 and can be accessed on foot using the public space around its facade. A visit works best during regular hours when religious services are not taking place.
A fire in January 2011 severely damaged the building and destroyed the museum and elderly care home that operated within the complex. Despite this setback, the structure underwent significant restoration work afterward.
