Museo de Los Tajamares

Museo de Los Tajamares is a museum in Providencia that houses preserved brick walls and structural elements discovered during the Santiago Metro Line 1 extension excavations in 1977. These remains came from the original flood defense system that once ran along the Mapocho River.

The Tajamares were defensive walls built in 1792 along the Mapocho to protect Santiago from flooding. They extended from Balmaceda Park to the Cal y Canto Bridge.

The building displays sections of flood control infrastructure from the 18th century, standing as a testament to the city's engineering heritage. Visitors can observe how local residents once addressed the challenges posed by the Mapocho River.

The building has been closed to visitors since 2003 due to water infiltration issues and awaits renovation by the Municipality of Providencia. It is best to check current information about reopening before planning a visit.

In 2019, municipal authorities covered the museum structure with sand to protect it from damage during frequent street demonstrations in the area. This unusual protective measure shows how the site remained connected to the city's social changes.
