Canchis Province, Administrative province in southern highlands, Peru.
Canchis Province is an administrative region in the southern highlands that includes eight districts spread across the territory. Its main city, Sicuani, serves as the capital while the other seven districts—Checacupe, Combapata, Marangani, Pitumarca, San Pablo, San Pedro, and Tinta—each have their own centers where residents conduct daily life and trade.
The province was created in 1833 when an earlier administrative division was split into separate territories. Sicuani was designated as the capital shortly after, becoming the seat of local government and administration.
The region is a center of Quechua culture, where traditional crafts and customs are woven into daily life. People shape the local character through their distinctive clothing and deep connection to ways that have endured for generations.
The region connects to Cusco via main roads, with regular bus services running to the district centers. Visitors should prepare for changing mountain weather since temperatures shift noticeably between day and night at this elevation.
The region contains Raqchi, an important archaeological site with remains from the Inca period located near the Willkanuta River. Travelers can visit structures that have endured for centuries and gain insight into how this area fit into the wider Inca world.
