Cutervo National Park, Nature reserve in Pimpingos, Peru
Located in the northern Peruvian Andes, Cutervo National Park spans 8,214 hectares of montane forests, cloud forests, and high-elevation grasslands.
The park's establishment in 1961 marked a milestone as Peru's first protected area, following advocacy efforts by biologist Salomon Vilchez Murga in Congress.
The El Perolito Archaeological Site within the park contains artifacts from pre-Columbian settlements, indicating long-term human presence in this Andean region.
Visitors can explore marked hiking trails through diverse ecosystems and observe wildlife species including the spectacled bear, mountain tapir, and golden-headed quetzal.
The Gruta de los Guácharos cave system houses colonies of oilbirds, rare nocturnal birds that navigate through darkness using echolocation.
