San Ignacio Province, Administrative province in northern Cajamarca Department, Peru.
San Ignacio Province is an administrative region in northern Cajamarca Department that spans diverse landscapes with mountains and valleys. The territory is marked by different elevations and is divided into seven districts, each with its own administrative center.
The province was officially established through Law No. 15560 on May 12, 1965, under President Fernando Belaúnde Terry. This creation followed negotiations that had begun decades earlier.
Local communities throughout the region have built their way of life around coffee farming, which shapes both the landscape and daily routines. This agricultural practice connects the different areas and creates a shared economic and social structure across the province.
The administrative center in San Ignacio de la Frontera handles official business and governmental services for the region. Different elevations throughout the area affect both climate conditions and accessibility in various zones.
The region preserves a mosaic of different ecological zones, from mountain forests to coffee-growing areas, that sit alongside each other near the Ecuador border. This combination allows unusual mixing of forest types and agricultural systems in close proximity.
