Tababela, Rural parish near Quito, Ecuador
Tababela is a small rural village in Ecuador's Pichincha province, set in a mountain valley at around 2,400 meters above sea level. The village is made up of scattered houses and farmland, with open fields and Andean slopes forming its surroundings.
For generations, the village lived as a farming community with very little connection to the outside world. The opening of Mariscal Sucre International Airport nearby in 2006 changed the area deeply, bringing new roads and activity to a place that had long been isolated.
Tababela is known for local festivals where traditional Andean music and dance bring people together in the open air. These gatherings are easy to notice if you happen to visit during one of the community celebrations.
The village is most easily reached by taxi or private vehicle, as public transport options in the area are limited. Traveling during the day is a good idea, since mountain weather can shift quickly and make the roads harder to navigate.
Despite sitting next to one of Ecuador's busiest airports, the village has kept much of its rural feel, with farmland still visible right beside the runways. The area has long been known for growing flowers and vegetables that do well at this mountain height.
