Parque El Ejido, Public park in Old Centre, Ecuador
Parque El Ejido is a public park in Old Quito situated at about 2,800 meters elevation that links the historic core with newer districts through green space. It features sports courts for ecuavoley, children's play areas, walking paths, and food vendors selling Ecuadorian cuisine.
Spanish colonial authorities established the Ejidos del Rey boundaries in 1535 as common grazing lands for livestock, a use that persisted for about 400 years. The area was later incorporated into Quito's urban development and remains a central public space.
On weekends, local artists line Patria Avenue with paintings and crafts that reflect Quito's creative traditions. The open-air displays turn the space into a meeting point where people gather to appreciate and buy handmade work.
The park is easily accessible on foot with well-defined paths that make navigation simple. Wear comfortable shoes and be aware of the elevation, especially if you have just arrived in Quito.
The park shelters around 1,470 plant species native to the inter-Andean region, including trees over 100 years old that are officially protected by the city. This botanical richness makes it a green refuge within the mountain city.
