The Casa de los Alcaldes stands on the northern side of Independence Square, between the Pizarro Palace and the Metropolitan Curia Palace in central Quito.
The property belonged to Juan Díaz de Hidalgo, one of the founders of San Francisco de Quito, starting from 1534 and later served as residence for President García Moreno.
The building follows traditional colonial architecture with two courtyards, featuring stone columns and wooden structures that represent Spanish colonial design principles.
The first floor currently contains tourism offices, while the upper level provides residential space for Quito's municipal leaders with views over the central plaza.
In 1990, the main courtyard underwent modifications where workers replaced the original clay tiles with a wooden pergola covered in glass, maintaining the original support elements.
