Church of Saint Frinci, Catholic church in Old Town, Quito, Ecuador.
The Church of Saint Francis is a Catholic place of worship in the colonial center of Quito, Ecuador, composed of several interconnected buildings. The complex includes a central courtyard, multiple cloisters, and additional chapels that form an extended religious ensemble.
The Franciscans Jodoco Ricke and Pedro Gosseal founded the church and convent on 25 January 1535 under the title of Saint Paul the Apostle, on ground where the palace of the Inca Huayna Cápac had stood. A provisional temple was finished two years later; the present building was begun in 1550 and completed around 1680, with the official inauguration in 1705.
The name honors the founder of the Franciscan order, whose followers established the first religious community in the city. The facade displays carved stonework with geometric patterns following Spanish-Moorish tradition, setting it apart from other religious buildings in the old center.
The complex sits on a plaza in the historic quarter, reached by broad stone steps from the forecourt. Visitors can explore the main chapel and several cloisters, discovering courtyards with quieter areas away from the busiest square.
The church holds more than 3,500 colonial artworks, and the Quito School of Art was founded in this building. Its Franciscan library was described in the 17th century as the best in the Viceroyalty of Peru.
