Playa Bonita, Beach in Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut, Argentina

Playa Bajada de los Palitos, also called Playa Belvedere or Refugio de Lobos, is a 2,030-metre sandy beach in Comodoro Rivadavia, Chubut, reached via Ruta Nacional 3 about 20 km south of the city centre. It lies in the Golfo San Jorge, bounded by Punta Marqués to the north, which separates it from Rada Tilly, and Punta Delgada to the south, separating it from Playa La Herradura. It belongs to a system of seven fine-sand beaches, the only such stretch in a coast otherwise made of gravel.

Between 1992 and 1993, promoters proposed a trans-Patagonian railway from a new port south of Rada Tilly to Puerto Aysén, Chile, to avoid the Cabo de Hornos route for containers. Plans showed port facilities near this beach, Playa La Herradura and Playa los Límites. Environmentalists opposed it because of the sea lion colony south of Rada Tilly; the idea is now dormant.

The beach is also called Playa Belvedere or Refugio de Lobos, and its name recalls the descent (bajada) to the sea. In summer it fills with residents of Comodoro Rivadavia spending afternoons in the sun, and since December 2017 temporary lifeguards patrol the sand.

Access is via Ruta Nacional 3, about 20 km south of Comodoro Rivadavia; entry roads were badly damaged by heavy use and weather, and since February 2018 the municipality and province have worked on repairs. A temporary lifeguard service has operated in summer since December 2017, with a fixed trailer post from 1 December to the end of the season in March. Low temperatures and strong wind gusts off the season make swimming risky.

In the coldest days of the year, once the tide withdraws, the sand freezes and a band of ice covers the full width of the beach. The same stretch of coast is also where an outbreak of avian flu killed many sea lions along the shore during the winter of 2023.
