Pico Salamanca, Mountain summit in Chubut Province, Argentina.
Pico Salamanca is a mountain summit in Chubut Province located along the Patagonian coastline near Comodoro Rivadavia. The conical peak rises 576 meters above sea level and forms a clearly visible natural landmark in this wide, flat coastal region.
The peak received its original name Pico Santo Tomás during exploration of the Gulf of San Jorge in 1745. The name was later changed to Pico Salamanca in honor of a Royal Navy officer.
The peak forms part of the Pampa Salamanca region, located next to the Patagonia Austral Marine Coastal Park that protects local wildlife and marine habitats. Visitors often spot seabirds and other animals that make their home in this harsh coastal landscape.
The peak can be reached through two hiking routes starting from Caleta Córdova, with the complete round trip taking about five hours. It is wise to start early and bring weather-resistant clothing, as the coastal region can be windy and changeable.
The trail system was unified and improved with better signage in 2022 to enhance safety during the hike. These modern improvements made the climb more accessible and safer than before, even though the mountain retains its rugged character.
