Reserva ecológica de Vicente López, Nature reserve in La Lucila, Argentina.
The Reserva ecológica de Vicente López is a nature reserve along the Río de la Plata coast in the Buenos Aires metropolitan area, made up of marshes, forests, and grasslands arranged in separate natural zones. Each of these habitats supports its own plant and animal communities, all within a single protected area.
The municipal government created this protected area in 1983 to keep the local ecosystem from being built over or degraded. It was one of the early efforts to safeguard the remaining natural land along the riverbank in this part of the Buenos Aires suburbs.
Inside the reserve, there is a native plant nursery where visitors can pick up free seedlings to take home and plant in their gardens. This shows how the local community takes an active part in caring for the natural environment around them.
The reserve is open every day of the year, though opening hours change with the season. Rangers are available on site and can help with orientation or answer questions during your visit.
River otters live in the wetlands of this reserve, just a short distance from one of South America's largest cities. Their presence so close to an urban area is rare and shows how much wildlife can recover when a small patch of land is left undisturbed.
