Edificio el Planeta, Art Deco building in Atlántida, Uruguay

Edificio el Planeta is an Art Deco building shaped like a ship, with three levels representing decks and a semicircular lookout point designed as the command bridge. The structure combines modern architecture with functional design elements that create a distinctive space for visitors.

Italian entrepreneur Natalio Michelizzi commissioned the building as a hotel that opened in 1937 and operated until 1958. This period marks the development of Atlántida as a beach resort with European influences shaping its urban design.

The building reflects maritime traditions in Uruguayan coastal design, integrating ship-like features into its structure. This connection to the sea shows how important ocean life has been to the culture of this seaside town.

The building sits at the intersection of Rambla and Calle 22 with direct beach access and serves as an easy landmark for navigation. You can reach it on foot from most locations in town.

The original design included a water-filled moat intended to surround the building and enhance the illusion of boarding a ship. This creative concept shows the ambitious vision behind the structure's conception.
