Laguna del Cisne, Canelones, Subtropical lagoon in Salinas, Uruguay
Laguna del Cisne is a shallow freshwater lagoon in the Salinas area with broad reed beds and low banks. The water body is bordered by major routes and presents an open water surface surrounded by low vegetation throughout.
The lagoon became the main water source for the coastal region starting in 1970 and was managed by the water authority. This role made it central to the infrastructure serving several communities across the area.
The lagoon takes its name from the swans that inhabit its waters and shape how locals perceive the place. You can spot these birds regularly across the water and among the reed beds that line the shore.
The lagoon sits at the crossroads of several major routes, making it accessible from different directions. The open location allows good views of the water from the surrounding roads.
The eastern section contains El Estero, a wetland that naturally filters and improves the water. This system supports over 40 different animal species within this particular area.
