Embalse Nuclear Power Station, Nuclear power plant
The Embalse Nuclear Power Station is an electricity-generating facility in Córdoba Province, built on the south shore of the Tercero River reservoir. The plant operates a CANDU reactor that uses natural uranium fuel and heavy water as both moderator and coolant, producing around 656 megawatts of power.
Construction began in 1974 and the station started commercial operation in 1984. Between 2007 and 2019, it underwent a life extension process involving replacement of major components like steam generators and pressure tubes to enable another 30 years of safe operation.
The power station is woven into local life, providing steady employment for many families in the region. Residents view it as a source of community pride, as it ensures reliable electricity for homes, schools, and businesses throughout the area.
The station sits about 4 miles (6 kilometers) west of the town of Embalse and is straightforward to reach. Visitors should know that the plant is strictly monitored and access to certain areas is restricted for safety reasons, though the outer grounds remain open and accessible for viewing.
Beyond generating electricity, the station produces cobalt-60, a radioactive isotope used in cancer treatments and for sterilizing medical instruments. Argentina is among the world's leading producers and exporters of this medical isotope, giving the facility an important role beyond power generation.
