National University of Córdoba, Public university in Córdoba, Argentina
The National University of Córdoba is a public university in the city of Córdoba, Argentina, and spreads across several sites in the center and a second area called Ciudad Universitaria on the outskirts. The 13 faculties range from medicine to architecture and agriculture and occupy entire city blocks.
Jesuits established the Collegium Maximum in 1613 and received papal permission to award academic degrees in 1621. The religious school later transformed into a state institution when the Jesuits were expelled from Spanish colonies.
The campus still carries the name Jesuitic Block and recalls the religious founders in the 17th century. The old buildings merge with modern faculties and create a space where students walk under archways and gather in courtyards.
The main buildings in the city center stand within walking distance near Plaza San Martín. Ciudad Universitaria lies several kilometers to the southwest and can be reached by city buses departing from the center.
The Hemoderivados Laboratory processes blood plasma into medicines and supplies hospitals across Latin America. This work lowers treatment costs considerably and makes rare therapies available even in remote regions.
