Samay Huasi, Historic house museum in Chilecito, Argentina
Samay Huasi is a house museum in Chilecito, a small city in the La Rioja province of Argentina, set on grounds that include vineyards and fruit orchards. The indoor spaces hold geological and anthropological collections from the surrounding region, alongside paintings and art objects from different periods.
The property originally belonged to British mining engineer William Treloar and passed to Dr. Joaquín V. González in 1913. González later left it to the University of La Plata, which turned it into a public cultural space.
The house was a gathering point for Argentine artists and writers who came here to work and exchange ideas. The rooms still display paintings and artworks left behind from that creative period.
The site brings together indoor collections and outdoor grounds in one place, so a single visit covers both. It is worth setting aside enough time to walk through the gardens and vineyards as well as the rooms inside.
The name comes from Quechua and means something close to 'rest house', pointing to the property's original role as a retreat in the Andean foothills. This connection to the indigenous language of the region is one of the first things visitors learn when they arrive.
