Estancia of Caroya

The Estancia of Caroya is a colonial agricultural property in Jesús María built with stone walls, wide courtyards, and wooden ceilings in the Spanish colonial style found throughout Argentina. The complex includes several buildings arranged around open courtyards that once functioned as a working farm producing crops and livestock.

The Jesuits built this estate in the late 1600s as a center for grain production and cattle raising until their expulsion in 1767. After that period, the property changed hands and continued to function as a working farm for generations.

The structures show how European and Indigenous approaches mixed through building details, farming practices, and daily life during colonial times. Walking through the grounds, you can sense how these two worlds came together in the spaces and routines of the estate.

The property is best explored with guided tours where interpreters explain the historical importance of the estate and its role in the Jesuit Block and Estancias of Córdoba. The stone walls bear marks from Indigenous craftsmen who participated in the construction, leaving traces of early colonial building techniques. These marks provide physical evidence of the direct labor and skills that local people contributed to building the structures.
