Ayolas, District in Misiones Department, Paraguay.
Ayolas is a district in Misiones Department located about 310 kilometers southeast of Asunción on the north bank of the Paraná River. The district has an airport without commercial service and connects to other regions through Route I Mariscal Francisco Solano López.
The district was founded in 1840 by Patricio Aquino under the direction of José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia and was originally called Paraje San Josemí. The completion of the Yacyretá Hydroelectric Dam in later decades transformed the region's infrastructure development.
The Araré Festival happens every September at the Mil Viviendas Theater, bringing together performers from Paraguay and Argentina. This event reflects the close cultural ties between the two countries that meet here along the river.
The district is best reached via Route I Mariscal Francisco Solano López, which connects it to other regions. Visitors should know that the local airport offers no commercial flights, so traveling by car is the practical option.
The Yacyretá Hydroelectric Dam completely reshaped the landscape and enabled eco-tourism and fishing opportunities in the region. Many visitors don't realize this dam is one of South America's largest inland hydroelectric projects.
