The market was founded in 1997 on land donated to Posadas under the requirement that it serve as a public commercial space. This project transformed available land into a place where local crafters could display and sell their work.

The location sits on Bolivar Street between Buenos Aires and Rivadavia, making it easy to find and reach on foot. Visitors do best arriving in the morning hours when most artisans are actively working at their stalls.
A key feature is the Monument to the Matero, created by sculptor Geronimo Rodriguez. The sculpture honors the yerba mate drinking tradition that runs deep in this region's daily life.
