Gran Chaco Province, Border province in Tarija Department, Bolivia
Gran Chaco Province sits in southern Bolivia, spreading across flat, open landscapes at around 316 meters in elevation. The region is shaped by agriculture and livestock farming, with Yacuiba serving as the administrative center.
The territory belonged to Argentina until 1900, when it became part of Bolivia through a border change. This shift led to the founding of Yacuiba as the new provincial capital.
The name Yacuiba comes from the Guarani language, referring to a place where birds drink water. Local communities continue to practice and celebrate traditions inherited from Guarani ancestors, which remain visible in daily life and local customs.
Yacuiba is reachable via well-maintained roads connecting to larger cities like Tarija and Santa Cruz. An international airport offers additional regional flight options for visitors.
The climate is subtropical with dry winters and averages around 1,097 millimeters (43 in) of rain yearly, enabling diverse agricultural activities throughout the year. This rainfall pattern sustains multiple farming methods across the region.
