Ypacaraí Lake, Recreational lake in Central Paraguay.

This water body extends 24 kilometers in length and 6 kilometers in width within Departamento Central, approximately 50 kilometers east of Asunción. Several towns border the shoreline, including San Bernardino on the western shore and Areguá on the southern shore. The shallow 90-square-kilometer (35-square-mile) surface is surrounded by gentle hills covered with vegetation. Sandy beaches alternate with rocky sections along the coastline, while reed beds form natural habitats for waterfowl.

Guaraní peoples originally called this water body Tapycua before Spanish missionaries introduced the name Ypacaraí around 1600. During the mid-20th century, lakeside communities developed into recreation destinations for affluent families from the capital. Environmental changes in the 1990s led to water quality concerns that triggered government and private restoration efforts. Infrastructure projects in subsequent decades improved access and established tourism facilities along the coastline.

Residents have connected this water body to weekend recreation and traditional celebrations for generations, while Guaraní language and folklore persist in surrounding communities. Sailing clubs organize regattas and swimming competitions that draw families from across the region. Artists have chosen the shoreline as subject matter for paintings and songs that contribute to Paraguayan identity. Local fishermen continue to use craft methods passed down through previous generations.

Regular bus services operate daily between Asunción's main terminal and surrounding towns of San Bernardino, Areguá, and Ypacaraí. Summer months from December through February offer warm weather for water sports activities but may attract many visitors. Restaurants and lodging concentrate especially in San Bernardino, while smaller towns provide quieter alternatives. Sunscreen and insect repellent are recommended due to strong sun exposure and mosquitoes near the shoreline.

The drainage system through Río Salado connects this water body to Río Paraguay and transports excess water during rainy season. The average depth of three meters (10 feet) allows sunlight to penetrate to the bottom, enabling aquatic plants to thrive. This shallow depth makes the water body susceptible to algae growth during high temperatures. Scientists regularly monitor nutrient levels and biological indicators to maintain ecological balance.
