Abismo Anhumas, Natural cave with underground lake in Bonito, Brazil.

This vertical cave extends 72 meters deep, featuring an underground lake with submerged limestone formations and exceptional water clarity for diving and snorkeling activities.

The cave remained undiscovered until 1984, when local explorers found its entrance, leading to its development as a monitored adventure destination in 1999.

Local indigenous communities maintain deep connections to the cave system, incorporating its existence into their traditional narratives about the regional landscape formation.

Visitors must complete mandatory rappel training before descending into the cave, and daily access is restricted to 18 participants with four scuba diving spots.

The underground lake contains 24,000 cubic meters of water with 60-meter visibility, revealing 20 large stalagmites that formed when the chamber was dry.

Monuments of Brazil: colonial architecture, contemporary museums, and natural sites

Brazilian architectural heritage reflects centuries of history, from colonial fortifications to contemporary structures. In São Paulo, the Flag Monument pays tribute to colonial expeditions, while in Belém, the Peace Theater recalls the prosperity of the rubber era. In Curitiba, the Oscar Niemeyer Museum showcases modern Brazilian architecture, and in Rio de Janeiro, the National Library holds over 9 million works in a neoclassical building. This collection brings together diverse sites that tell the story of the country’s development: military fortresses like São José de Macapá from the 18th century, cultural institutions like the Museum of Tomorrow focused on environmental issues, and managed natural spaces such as the Curitiba Botanical Garden. These sites offer an exploration of Brazil's history, architecture, and culture.

Natural areas of central west Brazil: waterfalls, caves, national parks

The central west region of Brazil encompasses states including Goiás, Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul. These areas contain national parks with hiking trails, waterfalls and cave systems. Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park near Alto Paraíso de Goiás displays cerrado vegetation and rock formations. Bonito offers clear rivers for snorkeling, while Pirenópolis combines colonial architecture with nearby nature reserves. Terra Ronca State Park contains underground rivers and limestone caves. The Pantanal area spans Mato Grosso and hosts various wildlife species. Chapada dos Guimarães near Cuiabá shows sandstone formations and viewpoints over the surrounding plains. The Jalapão region in Tocantins features dune landscapes and natural springs. These locations draw hikers, cave explorers and travelers looking to experience remote natural areas.
