Abismo Anhumas, Natural cave with underground lake in Bonito, Brazil.
Abismo Anhumas is a vertical cave in Bonito with an underground lake featuring crystal-clear water and impressive limestone formations. The lake contains large stalagmites that formed during periods when the chamber was dry.
The cave remained undiscovered until 1984 when local explorers found its entrance. It was then developed and opened to visitors as a monitored adventure destination in 1999.
The name Abismo Anhumas comes from the Guaraní language and refers to the depth and water of the system. Visitors experience this linguistic connection to the landscape as they descend into the cave.
Visitors must complete mandatory rappel training before descending and daily access is limited to 18 participants. The limited spots mean advance reservations are highly recommended.
The lake has visibility reaching about 60 meters, making underwater exploration exceptionally clear. This remarkable transparency allows visitors to see details on the bottom even from the surface.
