Blue Lake Cave, Natural cave system with underground lake in Bonito, Brazil
Blue Lake Cave is a natural monument featuring an underground cave system with a deep subterranean lake surrounded by white limestone walls. The central chamber extends into the darkness, creating a remarkable natural space where water and rock formations meet.
The cave system formed over millions of years as water carved through limestone, creating the underground passages and lake. Archaeological findings near the cave reveal that ancient animals once inhabited the region during different climate periods.
The Brazilian government designated this cave system as a Natural Monument in 1978 through the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage.
Entry to the cave is only possible with certified guides who maintain conservation standards during the visit. Tours are available year-round, though certain seasons offer different viewing conditions and experiences.
From September to February, sunlight streaming through the cave entrance creates an intense blue glow on the underground water. This natural light display is what gives the lake its distinctive name and makes these months especially striking to witness.
