Pantanal Aquarium, Public aquarium on Afonso Pena Avenue, Campo Grande, Brazil.
The Pantanal Aquarium is a public facility in Campo Grande housing around 220 different aquatic species in approximately 5 million liters of water across 33 separate tanks. These tanks are distributed throughout about 19,000 square meters, with each one designed to replicate different freshwater environments.
The facility opened in March 2022 and quickly became one of the largest freshwater aquarium complexes in the world. This opening marked an important moment for the region and created a new resource for education and conservation efforts.
The facility displays artifacts from eight indigenous peoples of the region, including traditional prayer houses and ceremonial drums that reflect local cultural heritage. Visitors can see how the spiritual practices and artistic traditions of these communities continue to be important today.
Visits need to be scheduled in advance through the official website, as opening hours are limited and vary by day. It is best to check beforehand when the facility is open and book your visit in advance, particularly on weekends.
More than two thirds of the species on display come from the Pantanal itself, while the rest come from the Amazon, Africa, Asia, and Central America. This mix allows visitors to compare the local biodiversity against other freshwater systems found around the world.
