Buraco das Araras, Natural sinkhole in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil.
Buraco das Araras is a rock sinkhole in Mato Grosso do Sul with a circumference of around 500 meters and depth of about 100 meters. At the bottom lies an emerald lagoon surrounded by red cliffs.
The formation developed through limestone corrosion underground, which caused the ground to collapse inward. Over time, this process shaped the landscape of the cerrado region in central Brazil.
Macaws nest within the crater walls alongside more than 120 bird species that make their homes here. This place has become important for people who want to watch wildlife in its natural setting.
Two observation platforms are accessible along a 900-meter walking trail, offering good views of the formation. Visits are arranged exclusively through tourism agencies in Bonito.
This is the largest sinkhole of its kind in Latin America and is home to two caimans in the isolated lagoon below. These reptiles have adapted to life in the depths and are rarely visible from the viewing platforms.
