The Metropolitan Cathedral of Our Lady of the Abbey and St. Anthony has a modern exterior with large front and side portals and several stained-glass windows. Inside is a single nave of irregular shape with one main altar. The present outline dates from the construction of the late 1980s.

The parish of St. Anthony was created on 7 April 1912, but the present building is not from that year. The church inaugurated in 1878 was demolished in 1922 and replaced; that second church was demolished in 1977 for safety reasons. The current structure dates from the late 1980s and was consecrated as a metropolitan cathedral on 17 October 1991, during Pope John Paul II's pastoral visit.

The city's patron saint is St. Anthony, chosen because founder José Antônio Pereira vowed to build a church if a malignant fever in Santana de Paranaíba spared the population. The parish of St. Anthony was created on 7 April 1912, and the cathedral keeps that dedication alongside Our Lady of the Abbey.

The name honors two religious figures: Our Lady of the Abbey and St. Anthony. This double dedication comes from a vow made by city founder Jose Antonio Pereira, who wanted protection for his new settlement.
