Massif of Urucum

Maciço do Urucum is a mountain massif near Corumbá that rises to 1,065 meters above sea level and forms the highest elevation point in Mato Grosso do Sul state. The rock formations display a distinctive reddish color due to their high iron content, which characterizes the surrounding landscape.

Mining operations began at the massif in the early 20th century due to its manganese and iron ore deposits. These activities established the region as a significant source of raw materials for Brazil.

Local indigenous communities have maintained connections to the mountain through generations, incorporating its presence into their traditional narratives and customs.

You can reach the massif via roads from Corumbá, with guided tours available through local agencies that provide transportation and equipment. Bringing comfortable hiking boots and plenty of water is advisable, as the ascent can be demanding.

As you climb, you can see how the earth tones shift from orange to deep red across the slope. This color variation happens because iron oxide concentrations differ throughout the rock layers.
