Mundo a Vapor, Theme park in Gramado, Brazil

Mundo a Vapor is a theme park in Canela, Rio Grande do Sul, whose façade reproduces the 1895 Montparnasse station train accident in full size, with a locomotive and its nose in the wall. Inside are working miniature steam machines: a pottery, a quarry, a paper factory, a thermoelectric plant, a hydroelectric plant and a mate factory. A four-metre locomotive with three carriages runs 270 m through a wooded area of about 6,000 m².

Ernesto Urbani ran a mechanical workshop in Canela in the 1920s, repairing the steam-driven locomobiles of local sawmills; his sons Omar, Benito and Hermes built working miniature steam machines from the workshop's scrap. The Mundo a Vapor park opened in 1991, turning that childhood project into a Canela attraction.

The park's name and layout recall the steam era of Campestre Canella, when Ernesto Urbani's workshop repaired locomotives for the sawmills and the train carried timber and supplies from Porto Alegre. A replica erva-mate factory shows the leaf from harvest to drying, a nod to the chimarrão drunk across Rio Grande do Sul.

The park is in Canela, not Gramado. The steam train ride, included in admission, lasts about four minutes and runs 270 m through a wooded area of roughly 6,000 m², with three carriages holding up to 12 people each. The miniature machines are small enough that some bricks and tiles can be held between fingertips.

The park's façade reproduces the 1895 Montparnasse station accident in Paris, where an out-of-control locomotive crossed the platform at high speed; the full-size reconstruction is the first thing visitors see.
