Banco Sul Americano Building, Modernist skyscraper in Bela Vista District, Brazil.
The Banco Sul Americano Building is a modernist skyscraper standing at the intersection of Avenida Paulista and Rua Frei Caneca, with 17 stories of concrete construction. The structure serves commercial purposes across its floors in São Paulo's financial center.
The building was designed and completed between 1960 and 1963 by three architects: Luiz Roberto Carvalho Franco, Rino Levi, and Roberto Cerqueira César. This collaborative effort produced one of the financial district's significant modernist structures from that era.
The building features landscape design and murals by Roberto Burle Marx, elements that visitors can see integrated into the architectural composition. These artistic touches give the space a distinctive character beyond its functional purpose.
The building is accessible from the sidewalk along Avenida Paulista or Rua Frei Caneca, and its corner location makes it easy to spot. Since it operates as an active commercial building, public interior access is limited, but the exterior facade can be viewed from the streets.
The sun shield system varies by facade side: horizontal elements on Rua Frei Caneca and different patterns on Avenida Paulista. This adaptive design responds to the different sun exposure on each street side.
