Casarão da Vila Fortunata, Eclectic pavilion in Cerqueira César, Brazil.
Casarão da Vila Fortunata is an eclectic pavilion in Cerqueira César that blends various architectural styles and influences visible throughout its exterior. Windows, doors, and ornamental details create a composition that draws from multiple design traditions while maintaining structural coherence.
Built in 1903, the residence originally belonged to Alexandre Thiollier, owner of São Paulo's first bookstore, who used it as a country house. The property gained CONDEPHAAT classification in 1992, securing its recognition as an important architectural landmark.
The mansion served as a meeting point for artists like Mario de Andrade, Oswald de Andrade, and Tarsila do Amaral during the 1920s. These gatherings became central to the development of modern Brazilian art and helped shape the cultural identity of the city.
The property is a protected architectural landmark that can be viewed from outside to appreciate its eclectic facade. Daytime visits offer the best light for observing the detailed architectural elements and decorative features of the building.
The renowned landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx was born in this house in 1909 while it was being rented. This birth connected the property to one of the most influential figures in modern garden design.
