São Paulo Museum of Art, Art museum on Paulista Avenue, São Paulo, Brazil.
São Paulo Museum of Art is an art museum on Paulista Avenue in São Paulo, Brazil. The concrete and glass building rests on two red beams that create a 74-meter open passage underneath.
Businessman Assis Chateaubriand and curator Pietro Maria Bardi founded the museum in 1947, acquiring many early works through telegram communications. The current building opened in 1968 following designs by Lina Bo Bardi.
Italian architect Lina Bo Bardi designed transparent glass panels to hold paintings so they appear to float freely in space. This display method allows visitors to walk between works and view both sides of the easels.
Access is through Trianon-MASP metro station on the green line, with free entry every Tuesday and on the first Thursday of each month. The main exhibition hall on the first floor displays the permanent collection.
The collection includes over 8,000 objects, ranging from European paintings to Brazilian art and works from Africa and Asia. The open space beneath the building regularly serves as a gathering spot for public events and demonstrations.
