Campos do Jordão State Park, State park in São Paulo, Brazil.
Campos do Jordão State Park is a protected reserve in the Mantiqueira mountains covering roughly 8,300 hectares with diverse forest types and high-altitude grasslands. Elevations range from around 1,000 to above 2,000 meters and include Atlantic Forest zones with Araucaria trees and cloud forest formations.
This protected area was established in 1941 as São Paulo's first conservation site. In its early decades, non-native conifer trees were planted extensively, altering the natural ecosystem structure.
The name comes from the open grasslands that form above the tree line in this high mountain setting. Visitors encounter local crafts in the visitor center and learn how the regional communities connect with these elevated landscapes.
The park is open daily and visitors can explore multiple marked trails leading to waterfalls and viewpoints throughout the landscape. Comfortable hiking shoes are recommended since the terrain is often steep and the high elevation requires gradual acclimatization.
The reserve shelters around 186 bird species including rare animals such as jaguars, ocelots, and colorful parrots that flourish in this natural mountain habitat. This rich wildlife benefits from the isolated high elevation that protects a specialized ecosystem.
