Captain Manoel da Costa Cabral established the church in 1672 after receiving permission from the Rio de Janeiro Ecclesiastical Chamber to build on his farm.
The basilica houses a wooden statue of the Good Lord Jesus, measuring 196 centimeters in height and weighing 50 kilograms, central to local devotion.
The basilica holds daily masses at 3 PM from Monday to Saturday, with additional services on Thursdays at 7 PM and six different time slots on Sundays.
According to local accounts, a sacred water spring emerged at the spot where the original statue of the Good Lord Jesus was discovered.
