Museu Monteiro Lobato, Literature museum in Taubaté, Brazil
Museu Monteiro Lobato is a literature museum in Taubaté, in the state of São Paulo, housed in a 19th-century colonial residence that served as the writer's birthplace. The rooms display personal objects, period furniture, and exhibits about his written work, all set within a property that also has an outdoor garden.
The house was built in the 19th century as the residence of the Visconde de Tremembé and is where writer Monteiro Lobato was born in 1882. After his death, the property was converted into a museum in 1958.
Monteiro Lobato is best known for his children's stories, especially the characters from "Sítio do Picapau Amarelo", which remain part of everyday Brazilian childhood. Visitors can browse editions of his books, original illustrations, and objects that show how deeply his stories entered Brazilian family life.
The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, and on weekends there are sometimes theater performances featuring characters from the writer's stories. It is worth setting aside enough time to walk through both the indoor rooms and the outdoor garden without rushing.
The building was constructed using rammed earth, a technique common in the coffee-growing regions of São Paulo in the 19th century. The thick earthen walls are still visible today and give the house a different feel compared to a brick-built structure.
