Museu Mazzaropi, Cinema museum in Taubaté, Brazil
Museu Mazzaropi is a cinema museum in Taubaté, in the state of São Paulo, dedicated to the life and work of filmmaker Amácio Mazzaropi. It holds photographs, scripts, costumes, and personal belongings from his productions, spread across several exhibition rooms.
The museum was founded in 1992 by João Roman Júnior to preserve the legacy of Amácio Mazzaropi, who made around 30 films between the 1950s and the 1980s. His productions were mostly shot in Taubaté, which explains why the museum was established in this city.
The exhibits show the costumes and props from films where Mazzaropi usually played a simple country man navigating city life. That character felt familiar to many Brazilians because it reflected the daily world of rural communities in a direct way.
The museum opens Tuesday through Sunday and offers guided tours and film screenings for both individual visitors and school groups. Visiting in the morning tends to be quieter, which makes it easier to follow the exhibition at your own pace.
The museum has its own screening room where original films with Mazzaropi are shown regularly, letting you see his characters in action. He produced, directed, and starred in most of his films himself, which made him a very rare figure in Brazilian cinema at the time.
