Praça Mauá, Public square in Centro district, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The 25,000-square-meter plaza connects the Guanabara Bay waterfront promenade with multiple cultural venues in downtown Rio de Janeiro.

The square opened in 1910 with a central monument to Baron Mauá, marking the start of Rio Branco Avenue and the port district numbering system.

The plaza features outdoor exhibitions, markets, and performances, flanked by the Museum of Tomorrow and Rio Art Museum on opposite sides.

Multiple bus lines, VLT tram stations, and metro stops provide easy access to the square, which includes seating areas and information points.

The 2015 renovation removed an elevated highway, transforming the space into an integrated cultural district with waterfront views and pedestrian zones.
