Mi Teleférico, Aerial tramway network in La Paz, Bolivia
Mi Teleférico is an aerial tramway network linking La Paz with the higher plateau of El Alto through ten color-coded lines that stretch over mountainous terrain. The cabins glide above steep slopes and narrow streets, offering open views of surrounding tin-roofed houses and distant snow-capped peaks.
The transport system began operations in May 2014 with three lines in red, yellow, and green, inspired by the colors of the Bolivian flag. Subsequent years saw the gradual opening of additional routes that connected previously separated neighborhoods.
La Paz station features a collection of paintings and sculptures by local artists displayed in the waiting areas. At several transfer points, vendors sell handwoven textiles and small snacks through the windows during brief stops.
The cabins run from early morning until late evening, with short waiting times at most stations. Rides tend to feel cooler than ground level due to the altitude, so bringing a jacket is advisable.
The blue line crosses a deep ravine where cabins hang in the air for several minutes without visible support towers below. Some passengers use the rides daily as the cheapest way to commute to work rather than sitting in traffic.
